Updates

Hey! Hope ya'll are doing fine! I'm just dropping by to mention a few changes on the blog and updates on my life:

  1. You must have noticed but if you didn't then let me point out, I changed the layout and fonts of the blog. So, what do you think?
  2. I'm changing the rating system. I was going through some blogs and noticed that most have them have such cool rating systems! But I only rate in numbers. So now I'm going to be copying the O.W.L. (from Harry Potter) grade system to rate books, movies, TV shows and anything else I review. The new rating system can be found in the left sidebar.
  3. I mentioned in my previous post that I'll be starting college from 9th September. I also said that I'll be scheduling posts and such. But my family and I may go on a trip next week so that wouldn't be possible. I just wanted to let ya'll know that I'm disappearing for a week so I'm sorry if I don't reply to your comments or emails. I'll do that as soon as I get back :)
And that's it. Hope you like the changes!

I'm off to college!

Well not literally "off" since my college isn't that far so I'll stay at home and take the bus every day. But yeah, I'll be starting college next week...

I didn't get into the college I initially wanted to, but the college that I did get in is considered the second best in the city so I'm happy. I'm both excited and nervous by the prospect of starting my college life.

I'm aware that it'll be very different from high school. Some of my friends are going to the same college but, as far as I know, none of them have the same class as me. That means I'll have to meet new people and make new friends. This scares me because I've never really been much of a people person...

I hope this chapter of my life goes well and I learn something valuable like I did through the high school experience. What I really want is for these 2 years of college to pass quickly so I can get into University and study medicine!

Anyway, with college starting I probably won't get much time to update. I was thinking of using my last week to schedule posts. I'll see what I can do to fit blogging and reading and watching Asian dramas into my college schedule.

Well, wish me luck! Oh and if you have any advice then please feel free to share. I would highly appreciate it!

My Rating: 10/10

My Thoughts: I just watched the most amazing movie ever! No seriously, this movie was fricking awesome! It made me laugh, it made me cry and I just adored every moment of it! It's definitely one of the better Korean movies I've seen and it made it to my favorites list. I can't believe I waited so long to watch it!

This movie is about friendship and it is very close to reality. I think that is why it made me cry so much, both happy and sad tears. It made me miss my friends and made me wonder what will happen in the future.

The story is really good! The way they switched between past and present was really cool and the movie was very well directed. The costumes and music of the past were done really well. The camera work was really good. And it was a lot of fun to watch.

The acting was very good, of both teen and adult actors. I saw Sora for the first time on We Got Married. She's completely different from how she was there! Here she is a bad-ass leader of Sunny and I loved her! The other girls were pretty good too. Na Mi reminded me somewhat of Velma from Scooby Doo :P

They cast the adult actors pretty well too. The faces matched and it was like they were the older versions of the teen actors. So props to the casting directors for doing such a good job. Also, the situations in which all of the characters were, were very real. That's what I loved the most about this movie, it was very close to reality.

Either Kim Shi Hoo-ssi loves to play characters from the past or he has that kind of a face that the directors cast him as a 80s boy. He played the same kind of role in Love Rain and I was pleasantly surprised to see him in this movie. The crush thing was so cute! It brought back memories of my first crush :P

I would highly recommend this movie even if you don't watch Asian movies. This movie is really well done, the acting is really good, the story is amazing and touching and it is definitely worth your while.

Showcase Sunday (2) ~ Book Fair!

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme hosted by Books, Biscuits and Tea.
It's been so long since I did one of these posts! It's not that I didn't buy books in so long. It was just a few books here, a few books there so I never felt like I should do a haul post for only a couple of books.

Well, there was a small book fair here and I found a really nice stall of old books so I bought 6. Here are my buys this week:

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I honestly have no idea what this book is about. But I've heard so much that I feel like I need to read this too...

The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

Again, a book everyone loves but I haven't read yet. So I bought it... Also, I love this cover!

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins

I've wanted to read this book from the day I saw the pilot episode of Supernatural. I don't know if there is a connection or not but this is supposed to be a mystery classic so why not give it a try?

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1) by Rick Riordan

With the new Percy Jackson movie coming out, every bookstore that I visit, the people there try to persuade me to buy these books. So I finally did! Yaay! But I'm not going to start this series until I finish the Harry Potter series.

One Day by David Nicholls

I've seen the movie and I liked it so I wanted to read the book too.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

This is probably my favorite book out of the ones that I've bought and I started reading it as soon as I got into the car. It's good so far. I love Pride & Prejudice, something about it feels like home (though I'm no where near English nor have I ever been to England).  I haven't really read any zombie books so I'm really looking forward to this. I'm a few pages in and I'm loving it so far. Plus I'm really enjoying the illustrations!

And that's the list of books I got this week. What books did you get recently?

Book Review~Dante's Girl by Courtney Cole

Title: Dante's Girl
Author: Courtney Cole
Series: The Paradise Diaries #1
Publisher: Lakehouse Press
Pub Date: June 24th 2012
Format: ebook
Pages: 356
Genre: YA, Romance, Contemporary, Travel

Synopsis: I have spent every summer since I was ten years old with my father in London. Every summer, since I was ten years old, has been uneventful and boring.
Until this year.

And this year, after a freak volcanic eruption strands me far from home, I have learned these things:

1. I can make do with one outfit for three days before I buy new clothes.
2. If I hear the phrase, “You’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto,” even one more time, I might become a homicidal maniac.
3. I am horribly and embarrassingly allergic to jellyfish.
4. I am in love with Dante Giliberti, who just happens to be the beautiful, sophisticated son of the Prime Minister of a Mediterranean paradise.
5. See number four above. Because it brings with it a whole slew of problems and I’ve learned something from every one of them.

Let’s start with the fact that Dante’s world is five light-years away from mine. He goes to black-tie functions and knows the Prime Minister of England on a first name basis. I was born and raised on a farm in Kansas and wear cut-off jeans paired with cowboy boots. See the difference?

But hearts don’t care about differences. Hearts want what they want. And mine just wants to be Dante’s girl.

My heart just might be crazy.

Rating: 6/10

Cover Talk: I LOVE the cover! It's so cute and matches the book perfectly! The little details like the map and passport and the quote and how the pictures and other stuff are attached to a board by thumb stacks looks so cool! And the models look exactly like how I imagined the characters!

My Thoughts: Dante's Girl was a quick and fun read. I was in the mood of a light romance so I'm glad I chose Dante's Girl.

The story feels like it's out of a Korean drama! There is a chaebol male lead, a small-town female lead, insta-love, an evil girl who wants to have the male lead etc. Seriously, throughout the whole book I kept thinking this is so much like a Kdrama! But I did enjoy it. The story was unbelievable and fantasy-like but sometimes you have to let the reality go so it worked in this book.

The writing wasn't something special and I don't know if I'll be picking up anything else by this author or not. But the book did feel like it wasn't edited a lot. Like the author didn't want it refined, she wanted it to be like how she first wrote it. And I honestly didn't have a problem with that. Sometimes it was fun to read it like that too.

Despite the story being like that of a Kdrama, the protagonist isn't the typical Kdrama female lead type. She has American written all over her. I'm not sure if I liked her much though. She was OK. But I liked how she accepted her mistakes and short-comings and when she acted stupid, she admitted that. One thing I would like to mention here is that I think the author tried to emphasize her "Americanism" too much. I get that she was in a foreign country and the author "showed" how different she was but why "tell" so much? It also felt like she was defending Americans. But for what?

Dante. Oh, Dante, Dante, Dante... I don't think I've ever read about such a sweet sweet boy. But he's a believable sweet boy. I don't know if such boys exist, I haven't met any, but it would be nice to meet such a boy. Dante is a really nice, gentle-man like, rich boy with a perfect body. Fantasy much? But he's not completely perfect. For example, he can't stand up to his father to tell him what he really wants to do. But other than that he's perfect.

Elena was your typical evil, rich girl. She didn't really play much of a part in the book though. Reece let her get to her without her having to do anything much which made me really angry at Reece. Dante's other friends were nice. Mia was likable and that other guy, the Casanova (I don't remember his name), was funny. Nate was also a typical villain. I don't remember any other characters...

The romance was... well, it was insta-love so what can I say? I'm not much of a fan of insta-love or love at first sight. I just don't believe in that stuff. But for some reason it didn't bother me much in this book. I think that's because I picked up this book to relax myself and I was OK with anything as long as it wasn't angsty (I don't think that's a word but oh well *shrug*) so the insta-love thing didn't matter.

All in all, this book was a nice, quick read for a summer day. It wasn't that memorable but it'll help you pass a few hours. :)

Shoujo Anime Recommendations

A while ago I had this MAJOR anime obsession (my brother is going through that phase now. I think he's got it much worse than I had) and during that time I watched A LOT of Anime. But I never reviewed them or really talked about them at all. Today I thought of doing a post showcasing some of my favorite Shoujo anime (anime aimed at young girls, 10-18 years of age) and ones that I'd recommend to others. These are in no particular order:

Sukitte Ii na yo/Say "I love you" was a really cute anime! I loved the characters and the story and I loved how they ended it properly instead of leaving it open-ended. I wasn't such a big fan of the animation though. The lead guy looked scary instead of handsome... but he was sweet. And I really enjoyed watching this one!

I loved loved loved Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun/My Little Monster! I've never had a huger crush on any anime boy than the one I had on Haru! Gosh, he's so cute! And his hair! I want to touch his hair! This anime was also really funny! I just wish they'd make a second season. Or I would have to read the manga to see what happens next...

Kaichou wa Maid-sama!/Maid Sama! is the anime that introduced me to the world of shoujo anime. I loved this anime! It was recommended to me by 2 of my class mates when they heard that I like to watch anime. Before that I didn't watch many anime, I had only seen a few. But after Kaichou I got hooked! I loved Usui! He will forever remain on my list of fictional boyfriends <3

Hanasakeru Seishounen is an anime that I did review on this blog. It was very different from the usual types of anime that I watch. Besides romance it had a lot of action and politics in it too. But it was fun to watch and it had a pretty good story. To read my whole review click here.

Vampire Knight, I think, is the first shoujo anime I ever saw. I really liked it at that time but looking back now, it wasn't that good. The story wasn't that amazing and the whole incest thing makes me feel uncomfortable. Either way, this is a very famous anime and if you don't have any problem with incest and like vampire romance then you should watch this.

I watched this a while ago and I'm currently reading the S.A: Special A manga. I gotta say, I like the manga better. But the anime wasn't that bad either. The story is really interesting and the romance is sweet, albeit a bit slow. The story is somewhat like Kaichou's but I liked SA's better because it also includes stories about the side characters.

Ouran High School Host Club is one of the most famous anime around. BUT I didn't watch it all. It has 26 episodes and I think I made it to the low 10s but it was just way too slow! It was very funny, yes, but I wanted romance and there wasn't much of it. No wait, there was romance, it was just moving too slow. Then I read what happens in the later episodes and dropped the anime. So I'd recommend this if you want to watch something funny but have the patience for slow romance.

Fruits Basket/Furuba is an anime that has a special place in my heart. I don't know, there's just something so sad and pure about this story. I adore this anime! I love Kyo! One day when I get a cat of my own, I'll name him Kyo. I highly recommend this anime but prepare yourself for major feels! Don't worry, there's comedy too in between. And important life lessons.

Peach Girl didn't seem like an anime. It seemed like an american cartoon. And since I watched it English dubbed, it felt more so like that. But the characters and situation also felt very American... I didn't watch this whole though. Only, I think, half of the episodes. I got sick of the drama. But I can see why people would like this anime. So if you are in the mood of something with teenage drama, you know Gossip Girl type, then you should give Peach Girl a try.

I LOVED Kamisama Hajimemashita/Kamisama Kiss! It has got a great story and awesome characters! It has comedy and mystery and magic. It is definitely one of my favorite anime! I wish they would make a second season for this one... I'd highly recommend Kamisama if you want to watch something with romance, comedy and magic!

Kimi ni Todoke/Reaching You was such a sweet anime! But it's really slow. That is why I dropped the anime and watched the movie instead. But the story really is very sweet and the characters are very real. I would highly recommend this anime, that is if you have the patience for it. If not, then I would suggest that you should watch the movie. Because the story really is very nice and cute!

I really liked the music in Uta no Prince-sama. The story isn't that bad either. But I really don't like the lead girl. But that's OK because there are so many gorgeous boys surrounding her that I don't have to look at her. ;) Anyway, I would recommend this if you want to watch an anime with good music and pretty boys in it. It has a second season too but I haven't come around to watching it yet.

Just like Fruits Basket, Bokura Ga Ita/We Were There holds a very special place in my heart. The story was so sad and happy and just amazing! The anime is open-ended but I watched the movie too so I know what happens next. It's a really wonderful story and I would highly recommend it. But prepare yourself for major feels!

Toradora! was sweet but very slow. The story is nice and I really enjoyed watching this one. So if you want to watch a lighthearted romantic comedy, I would recommend Toradora.

Lovely Complex/Love Com is such a sweet and cute anime! I didn't watch it all because I had seen the movie but the story is really adorable! The characters are funny and this anime is highly recommended if you are in the mood of a good romantic comedy/friends-turned-lovers story!

Do I really have to talk about Itazura na Kiss? I think almost everyone knows about it. It is one of the most popular stories out there! The manga has been adapted into an anime, 2 Japanese dramas, 2 Taiwanese dramas and a Korean drama. This was recommended to me by a friend though. I hated the male lead! But there is just something about this story that makes you keep watching it. The girl is dumb as hell and abused by the guy. I hate such stories! But I don't know what there is about Itazura na Kiss, it works. And works well, seeing as I sacrificed my sleep to watch it.

Chihayafuru focuses more on friendship than love. It also involves sports. These are the two reasons I stopped watching it because at the time I waned to watch something romantic and I'm not much into sports. But the story of this anime is really touching and it is a really good anime. So if you like sports and don't mind the anime not being that romantic (it does have romance, but not a lot and really slow) then I would recommend watching Chihayafuru. It as good life lessons and tells the importance of friendship.

And here you have it! I hope this list helped you! :) If you have any more recommendations, then comment below!

Books I'd love to see turned into a movie or TV show

Every so often I come across a book that I'd LOVE to see as a movie or TV show. Today I thought I'd share a list of such books with you guys...

This book would make such a fun and inspirational movie! And it would have 2 cute boys ;) I would sssooo love to see this movie! Especially because the main character is really relatable. And the book is short so they wouldn't have to omit a lot of stuff either.

I've said this before, I'll say it again... PLEASE SOMEONE TURN THIS INTO A TV SHOW!! Please! I'm begging you! This series would make such an awesome TV show! And more books are coming out! Even better! 6 seasons are already there! Just please please! I know these are being turned into a movie but I don't think a movie will be able to do justice to this series. So please make this into a TV show!

Can I just say first... I love the new covers! I haven't read the whole series yet, I'm on the third book. But I think these would make a good movie series, each book being a movie. That makes it 4 movies. This series would have such a gorgeous cast! You know, as Sprites are gorgeous people. So lots of eye-candy! :D And the story's pretty interesting too. I, for one, would love to see these movies!

These series have a really interesting story! I would love to see them as movies! Michelle even has a dream cast for the books. How awesome would it be if these actually get turned into a movie series and Taylor Swift plays Lizzie?!!

I love road-trip movies! And this book was one of my favorite books last year. I think this book would make such an amazing movie! Funny and relaxing, a great summer movie!

I'll be honest, the only reason I want to see this turned into a movie is because I want to see a real-life Sam. Sam is one of my majorest book crushes! The story of this book is really good but it's fine even if it doesn't get turned into a movie. I only want to see a real-life Sam, that's all.

This book would make such a funny movie! If you've been reading my blog, you know that I LOVE 'best-friends turned lovers' stories! Books, movies, anything! I just adore the theme! And this book has exactly that theme. Plus it's hilarious! It would be so much fun to watch!

And that's my list! :) Do you have any books you'd love to see turn into a movie or TV show? Comment below! I'd love to see if you have any!

TV Show/Drama Review~Secret Garden

Title: Secret Garden
Writer: Kim Eun Sook

Producer: Lee Min Jeong
Main Cast: Ha Ji Won as Gil Ra Im, Hyun Bin as Kim Joo Won, Yoon Sang Hyun as Choi Woo Young/Oska, Kim Sa Rang as Yoon Seul

Original Run: 13 November 2010 - 16 January 2011
Running Time: 60 minutes

No. of Episodes: 20
Language: Korean

Synopsis: The drama tells the story of Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin), an arrogant and eccentric CEO who maintains the image of seeming perfection, and Gil Ra Im (Ha Ji Won), a poor and humble stuntwoman whose beauty and body are the object of envy amongst top actresses. Their accidental meeting, when Joo Won mistakes Ra Im for actress Park Chae Rin, marks the beginning of a tense, bickering relationship, through which Joo Won tries to hide a growing attraction to Ra Im that both confuses and disturbs him. To complicate matters further, a strange sequence of events results in them swapping bodies.

My Rating: 10000!! Or 10/10. Either one goes ;)

My Thoughts: OhmyGod I loved this drama so much!! My new favorite <3 I've been going around recommending this to anyone I know who watches Kdramas. I've been talking about this drama with my mom for days! So much so that my mom has started ignoring me in the hopes that I would go away. And I eventually did. To rant about this drama to you guys!

Story: The story was amazing! It was very different than the other Kdrama stories. Well for one, the guy fell for the girl first instead of the other way around, which is usually the case in Kdramas. The girl wasn't weak, didn't cry all the time, wasn't stupid, wasn't clingy etc. She was strong and independent and I loved that about her! Then there was a little magic and fantasy involved which was a nice change.

It wasn't all different though. There was a mysterious past which connected both characters, love triangles and other stuff which are usually found in kdramas. But they were very well executed in this drama so it didn't seem over-done or the same.

One thing I really really loved about this drama was the pace at which it moved. Usually, I've seen, kdramas move either too slow or too fast or a mix of both which has been a cause of frustration for me with a lot of dramas. But Secret Garden moved at such a good and comfortable pace, I loved that! My mom watches kdramas with me but she doesn't watch each and every episode. She watches one episode then skips 2-3 and I tell her if she missed anything important. Usually I'm OK with that because nothing much, of importance, happens in those 2-3 episodes so I don't have to tell much. She did the same with Secret Garden but so much happened in one episode that I got frustrated and told her to watch it with me if she wants to know what happens as I cannot tell her all that has happened. That doesn't mean that everything happened too fast, it means that it happened neither too fast nor too slow. It happened at just the right pace.

Actors & Characters: The actors were all so amazing! This drama had a great cast! Especially the two leads. Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won did such an amazing job! This is the first time I've seen both of these actors and I was very impressed with their performance.

Hyun Bin!!!!!! OMG I'm in love with this man!! I know he's 13 years older than me but hey, I love Ian Somerhalder and he's 17 years older than me! So age is just a number, it has no importance when it comes to love. Though it is a different matter that in reality a relationship with such a huge age gap would be too weird, at least for me. But this is just imagination so it's fine ;) But HYUN FREAKING BIN OHMYGOD!!!!

This man has got style! He held himself so perfectly and did such an amazing job playing a chaebol! The way he walked, the way he talked, the way he stood, everything screamed "He's a narcissistic, spoiled, rich brat!". But his character was also so sweet and cute and nice!!! He had an innocent side to him, despite being arrogant, and I love him so much! Hyun Bin is such a freaking amazing actor! The way he looked at Ra Im had me convinced he was actually in love with her. That elevator scene, oh my God don't get me started on that elevator scene! His performance was so good! And then when he turned into Ra Im. His acting then was amazing too! This role was a pretty hard one, it had a lot of elements combined and the character was a diverse one but Hyun Bin did such an amazing job! He really did justice to a great character. He's more than just a pretty face, much more.

I loved Gil Ra Im! She was strong, independent and confident and I loved how she fought back. Ha Ji Won played this character so well! Ra Im was bad ass but she also had this teenage girl side to her. I honestly loved her as a character, hers is a character that I'll probably remember for a long time. I haven't really seen many great actresses in the Korean industry. One whom I really admire is Yoon Eun Hye but that as far as my 'favorite Korean actress' list goes. I guess it's still too early to say as this is only my first Ha Ji Won drama but I think she has made it to that list too. She did the fighting scenes splendidly! She was not shy of kissing scenes either. And she did the emotional acting really well too. I loved her performance in the drama!

Oska Oppa! Oska was such a funny and adorable character! I never thought I would call a 35 year old man "adorable" but that's what he was! He was so lovable and (these are my mom's words) really balanced Hyun Bin's character. He really loved Joo Won as a brother and it showed. Their brotherly love was so sweet! And he was so cute with Yoon Seul! He was a playboy who fell in love. I even loved his narcissistic comments, he wouldn't have been Oska without them. I felt that he really liked Ra Im as a younger sister. Their conversations were really cute!

Yoon Seul is so pretty! I guess she would be since she was Miss Korea in 2000. Hers was a character I loved and hated. I felt sorry for her but was frustrated with her too. I'm not going to say much more since I don't want to give out any spoilers but like all the other characters in the drama, I liked her too.

Han Tae Sun was a really mysterious character. I mean they never said who he was, where he had come from and his personality was really mysterious too. Mysterious enough that you'd want to get to know him better. That is why I wish he would've been there a little more, that we had gotten to get to know him a bit better. Anyway, Lee Jong Suk did a good job playing him. The expressions that he made, I really loved those! He was always angry but he looked cute angry. And he acted being gay really well without overdoing it. So an applause for the cute and mysterious Lee Jong Suk as Han Tae Sun!

I loved Secretary Kim & Ra Im's best friend! They were so cute and funny and just adorable! There's not much to say about them, it was evident they cared about their friends, Secretary Kim about Joo Won and Ah Young about Ra Im. They were amazing side characters and I think the actors did a great job playing them!

The other side characters were good too. Joo Won's mom was EVIL! Oska's mom was better, I think. At least she let her son have freedom. I liked Director Im, he cared a lot about Ra Im... it was sweet. And he provided a good rivalry for Joo Won so I liked that too. The guy who was trying to take Joo Won's place, I think he was in love with him! :P No seriously though, he did care about him. And admired him. I guess he was just a bit jealous...

Other Stuff: The humor was really good in this drama! When you've got 2 characters switching bodies there's a lot of potential for comedy. But it wasn't just that. Not only did Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won did a splendid job but the other characters made me laugh out loud too. One of them is Oska, as I've mentioned before. But Secretary Kim, Ah Young, and Ra Im's action school people were really funny too!

Another thing I really loved in the drama was the reality of feelings in it. The misunderstanding between Oska and Yoon Seul was believable. The actions of the characters were natural. Like Oska wanting to save Joo Won instead of Ra Im. Joo Won's mom not accepting Ra Im even at the end. All of them were believable and real. Even if this was a fantasy drama the reality in it was maintained like it is in Harry Potter and I really loved that.

I wish I could write more but this review has already gotten very long. Instead I'll leave you with some pictures of my favorite scenes:

And some gifs...

Oh and I loved Ra Im's "Munja Wa Shong" ringtone! It's my sms ringtone right now :D And Joo Won's song with which he distracted himself was so cute. Especially the way Hyun Bin recited that <3 And Joo Won's lines "Is this the best? Are you sure?" and the thing he says about his tracksuits <3 And I'll stop the fangirling now :P Now go and watch Secret Garden! Enjoy!
